Introduction to Certification
COSMOS certification is an international certification for natural/organic cosmetics and raw materials. To date, more than 21,000 products in 60 countries have received the COSMOS ORGANIC or COSMOS NATURAL certificate, and more than 16,000 cosmetic ingredients have been certified as organic and approved as natural ingredients.
COSMOS standards promote the consumption of these raw materials together with international organic product certification and sustainable certification standards to protect the health of consumers and the environment and to protect a healthy ecosystem.
The COSMOS standard is a European and international standard jointly developed by AISBL (a non-profit association based in Belgium) created by a coalition of European organic cosmetics certification bodies. By combining the natural/organic cosmetics certification standards of every certification body in Europe into a single standard, it has become a new system that certifies organic cosmetics and natural cosmetic products under a single common standard.
COSMOS certification standards are representative standards for organic and natural cosmetics selected by companies in more than 60 countries, as well as in Europe and the United States. You can increase consumer confidence in your products by promoting your products through the internationally recognized COSMOS certification logo. COSMOS standards prohibit animal testing, GMOs, nanomaterials and petrochemicals. By managing your products according to COSMOS standards, you can lead the way in protecting the health of consumers and the environment worldwide.
Introduction to the COSMOS-AISBL Association
COSMOS-AISBL is an independent international non-profit association based in Brussels that owns and develops COSMOS standards and supports the activities of its member institutions. The founding members are five European certification bodies: BDIH (Germany), COSMEBIO & ECOCERT (France), ICEA (Italy) and SOIL Association (United Kingdom).
COSMOS-AISBL published its first standard in 2008 and entered into force in January 2010. Later, a 5-year grace period was given as a transitional period, and the existing certification standards were implemented in parallel, but from January 1, 2015, products are certified by the uniform certification standard of the COSMOS standard. COSMOS-AISBL continues to develop and maintain COSMOS standards.
