Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of the world’s leading standards that independently certifies the entire textile supply chain and defines textile processing conditions for organic fibers, including environmental and social criteria.

Version 4.0 was published on March 1, 2014, 3 years after the publication of Version 3.0 and 9 years after the publication of Version 1. The information in this section is intended to provide an overview of the content and essential requirements of the standard. It cannot be used for any official purpose as it does not reflect all the criteria in the standard.

The purpose of this standard is to define the conditions for ensuring the organic status of textile products, from the collection of raw materials to labeling, in order to provide reliable assurance to the end consumer with an environmentally and socially responsible production approach.

Textile manufacturers can easily export their organic fabrics and clothing with this certificate, which is accepted in all major markets.

This standard covers the production, processing, packaging, labeling, trade and distribution of all textile products produced from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. End products may include (but are not limited to) yarn, fabric, apparel, fashion textile accessories (wearable or not), textile toys, home textiles, bedding and bedding, as well as textile personal care products. The standard does not specify criteria for leather goods.

Accepted Criteria for Organic Fibers

The fibers must be certified organic according to recognized international or national standards (IFOAM family, EEC 834/2007, USDA NOP). It is also possible to certify transitional fibers under this standard if the relevant agricultural standard allows it.

Labeling Criteria: The standard defines two different labeling classes:

Label Class 1: Organic: Textile products bearing the label “Organic” must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers. Label Class 2: % Made from Organic: A product with the label class “% Made from Organic” must contain at least 70% certified organic fibers. It is prohibited to mix ordinary and organic fibers of the same type in the same product. Ordinary cotton, mohair wool and virgin polyester are not allowed in the product.

Some of the Environmental Criteria
 • Organic fiber products must be separated from conventional fiber products at each stage of the process chain and must be clearly identified.
 • All chemical inputs (e.g. dyes, additives and process chemicals) must be evaluated and meet basic requirements for toxicity and biodegradability/degradability.
 • Substances such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nanoparticles, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their enzymes are prohibited.

 • The use of synthetic water retention agents is limited. Knitting and weaving oils must not contain heavy metals.
 • Oxygen-based bleaches are allowed. (Do not use chlorine-based bleaches)
 • Azo dyes that emit carcinogenic amino compounds are prohibited.
 • Transfer printing using aromatic solvents and plastisol printing using Phthalate – PVC are prohibited.
 • There are also restrictions on accessories (e.g. PVC, nickel or chrome are not allowed)
 • Packaging material must not contain PVC. Paper or cardboard used in packaging material, hang tags, etc. must be recycled or certified according to FSC or PEFC.
Wastewater from all wet technology plants must be treated in a functional sewage treatment plant.
Some of the Product Criteria
 • Raw materials, intermediate products, finished textile products and accessories must meet limits related to unwanted residues.
 • Technical quality parameters must be met (abrasion, sweat, light and washing fastness values, etc.)
Some Social Criteria Social criteria based on the basic norms of the International Labor Organization (ILO) are expected to be met by all processors and manufacturers. Some of these are:
 • Forced labor is prohibited.
 • The right to organize and the right to collective bargaining cannot be impeded.
 • Working conditions must be safe and healthy.
 • Child labor cannot be used.
 • Minimum wage must be applied.
