Legal Requirements
Currently, more than 60 countries around the world, including EU countries, England, India, Australia and Japan, make labeling of genetically modified foods mandatory. India; by raising the acceptance conditions to a higher level for certain product groups, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced on October 12, 2020 that 24 major food products to be imported into India (apples, eggplant, corn, wheat, melon , pineapple, papaya, apricot, potato, rice, soybean, sugar beet, sugar cane, tomato, sweet pepper, pumpkin, linseed, bean, apricot and chicory) will be issued by the competent authority of the exporting country “Non-GMO and from GMO It has been reported that the Certificate of Free Status is mandatory from March 1, 2021. In addition, it was noted that our potential export products such as peas and other grain products may also be affected by the relevant regulation. In this regard, for the said 24 products, it has been made mandatory to attach a non-GMO origin and GMO-free certificate issued by the national authority of the exporting country to the shipment of each product to be shipped to India.
Purpose and Benefits of the Standard
The purpose of the Non GMO standard; to prevent the consumer from reaching any food or feed that has been genetically modified or used as a raw material and to ensure the control of processes by verifying and developing process and quality procedures with a risk management approach. As a result of the verification of a complete and standard system, a Non-GMO certificate is drawn up, and logos/expressions reflecting the expression of GMO-free production are placed on the packaging of the products. Non GMO standard; aims to deliver a safe product to the end consumer by fulfilling the legal regulations and other requirements of the standard related to the product groups within. In addition; Due to its international recognition and credibility, the Non-GMO document provides benefits in providing time and financial gains in terms of trade, in the application of HACCP or risk-based approach in food safety management, in the creation and implementation of a program designed with risk assessment for product research, testing and analysis. Promotes the establishment and management of a crisis management system.
