The Organic Content Standard (OCS) applies to food products containing between 5-100% organic matter. This standard confirms the presence and amount of organic matter in the final product. OCS also tracks the flow of raw materials from source to final product. This process is then certified by an accredited third party.
The goal of the Organic Content Standard (OCS) is to provide credibility to organic content claims. OCS achieves this goal by certifying the amount of organic material in the final product. It provides a strong supply chain management system from the source of organic raw materials through certification to the final product. Enables transparent, consistent and comprehensive independent assessment and verification of organic material content claims in products by an accredited third-party certification body. As an inter-institutional tool, OCS can be used to confirm whether the products purchased by companies actually contain organic material.
The standard does not cover field certification of raw materials. This will be confirmed regardless of the certification of the manufacturing process. In addition, process inputs (such as chemicals), environmental conditions (such as energy, water use), social issues, safety issues or legal compliances are also not included in the scope of OCS. target users of OCS; processors, manufacturers, brands and retailers, traders, certification bodies and organizations supporting organic initiatives.
OCS is a voluntary standard created by the Textile Exchange and is not intended to replace the legal or regulatory requirements of any country. It is the responsibility of each transaction to demonstrate compliance with all applicable laws and regulations regarding marketing, employment and trade practices. In cases of conflict between local legislation and OCS requirements, the certification body should contact Textile Exchange to find the most practical solution. If there is confusion about the interpretation of the standard, the first point of contact should be the certification body, which will contact Textile Exchange for further clarification.
Textile Exchange is a non-profit, member-supported international organization founded in 2003 under its original name, Organic Exchange. Textile Exchange’s mission is to inspire and help people to increase sustainable applications in the textile value chain.
