Position Summary:

Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring, equipment, and life safety and electrical control systems to ensure adequate, safe, and operable institutional facilities.

This position will function as a member of Facilities Management providing customer service and relations to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls community. Employees are expected to be flexible in the performance of their job functions and to communicate openly with supervisors, co-workers, other departments, students and University employees.

This position involves exercising individual initiative, judgement and creativity; applying cumulative, specialized and practical knowledge under minimal direction and supervision. The position frequently develops recommendations and estimates for installation of wiring and equipment to support campus electrical system projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a current Wisconsin Journeyman Electrician license
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the electrician trade.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with the National Electrical Code, Wisconsin State Electrical Code, Wisconsin Division of Safety & Professional Services ( DSPS ) building Codes.
  • Significant knowledge and experience complying with all safety laws and regulations (e.g. Electrical Arc Flash Compliance, Lockout-Tagout, OSHA , WI Department of Safety & Professional Services).
  • Thorough knowledge of major types of electrical installations, common and unusual breakdowns, and standard repair procedures.
  • Ability to read the English language sufficiently to read and understand construction documents (i.e., blueprints), requisitions, work orders, hazardous substance warnings, installation and repair manuals, and equipment operating instructions.
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others fluently using the English language, in person or over the telephone, with or without the use of auxiliary aids, in order to convey information.
  • Ability to enter, exit, and perform duties in confined spaces in order to correct problems.
  • Ability to perform duties within temperature ranges so as to do necessary outdoor maintenance in the summer and winter.
  • Ability to work in special clothing and common protective safety attire.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform physical labor including heavy lifting (50 pounds), bending, stooping, twisting and other motions; ability to work with arms above head for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work from step ladders up to 14 feet, extension ladders up to 24 feet, personnel lifts, and a bucket truck.
  • Ability to use knowledge and experience to independently provide recommended scope for projects and repairs and to provide basic estimates on materials and labor costs.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment test.
  • Hold and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver's License to drive University vehicles.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with safety and maintenance of medium voltage power distribution systems is desirable; including knowledge and experience to identify, inspect and perform maintenance to medium voltage cable connections; perform maintenance on the switchgear back-up batteries; properly use all recommended personal protective equipment.

Applicants are required to provide a resume and a cover letter addressing:
1) The projects you have worked on including dates and your role in the project.
2) Any experience as a maintenance electrician, service electrician, foreman or project leader.
3) Your Wisconsin Journeyman or Master Electrician license number.

A criminal background check will be completed on final candidates. The selected candidate must be able to pass a post-offer pre-employment screen and hold a valid driver's license to obtain Wisconsin certification to drive University vehicles. A six-month probationary period is required.

Starting rate of pay is $45.36 to $46.82 per hour, depending on leave time selected, plus benefits.
