Job Description
The School Nurse establishes a practice that is professionalism, warmth, and expertise. He or she is responsible for planning, coordinating, and providing health services to ensure that the LCDS infirmary meets all requirements of the State of Pennsylvania. The School Nurse promotes the health and well-being of the students and staff at LCDS while maintaining required records and communicating regularly and promptly with school families. This is a 12-month position. Expected work hours are 7:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Vacations include school breaks and an allotment of vacation to be used when school is not in session.
Essential Responsibilities
- Consults with school administrators to establish, review, and revise policy and procedures for a comprehensive school health program. Updates handbooks and school forms annually for clear communication of protocols.
- Establishes, reviews, and maintains appropriate medical and health service programs for the school, advising the Head of School on any needed changes or additions to existing school policies or procedures regarding the health care needs of the school community.
- Collaborates with school administration on procedures to collect and communicate requirements of PA School Code mandates, and provides administration with periodic updates on student status.
- Performs yearly PA school health screenings for all students. Communicates out-of-normal-limit results to parents with personal and thoughtful outreach. Documents screening results in SNAP system.
- Manages the collection of and maintains easy access to all required records, including emergency health information (e.g. allergies, specialized needs), forms required by DHS for our after-school program, students for whom a parent/guardian has NOT authorized use of standing order medications, and the status of required medical services per the PA School Code (medical examinations, etc.) for all students.
- Ensures that every child has a completed and updated, as appropriate, Certificate of Immunization.
- Maintains a shared Google spreadsheet that quickly identifies those who are not in compliance with required forms and immunizations. Updates the appropriate administrators prior to the start of the school year. Students missing forms should not be allowed to attend school.
- Sends school Immunization Data (SILR) to PA Department of Health annually, by December deadline.
- Responds to emergency medical situations; performs first aid as needed; coordinates with local emergency personnel and agencies as required.
- Creates and maintains current documentation of all significant visitations, treatments, and medical service within the SNAP system.
- Reports all significant medical treatments of students to their parents/guardians by the end of the same workday.
- Provides medical care and services to students and employees according to standing orders or a health-care provider’s prescribed medical care and treatment orders. Provides other parent-approved treatment to students as necessary.
- Writes and maintains nursing care plans for students with medical conditions.
- Contacts parents or caregiver of a child who has missed three consecutive days of school, to notify that if a fourth consecutive day is missed, a note from a physician must be emailed to the nurse prior to the child returning to school.
- Completes accident reports for students; works with HR to complete accident reports for employees.
- Works closely with school counselors to support students’ mental health and well-being.
- Coordinates substitute nurse schedules as needed and works with the substitute nursing staff to maintain the professional operation of the infirmary.
- Works in coordination with the school’s HR department to maintain the school’s Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Policy and Plan
- Maintains AED equipment and inventory of supplies needed in the infirmary.
- Develops and monitors procedures for maintaining defibrillators and supplies in all school first aid kits.
- Packs the necessary forms, medications, and first aid kits for field trips.
- Supplies the Admissions office with the necessary PA state health forms for school admission.
- Follows required cleaning and sanitization procedures.
- Carries a school walkie-talkie at all times to ensure access in the event of need, and posts a note informing visitors of location if out of the nurse’s station.
- Adheres to the highest standards of confidentiality, and privacy rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Functions
- Provides instruction to various grade levels on age-appropriate topics such as germs, hygiene, and puberty.
- Coordinates Vision Corps screenings for preschool and junior kindergarten students.
- Attends the school’s professional day activities as well as pertinent professional meetings, classes, conferences and workshops relating to school nursing.
- Serves on the LCDS Safety Committee and the LCDS Student Wellness Committee (SWELL).
- Participates in student support team meetings as requested.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Certified and Licensed Registered Nurse (RN)
- Current PA Registered Nurse License
- Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED Certified
- Knowledge of current PA Child Protective Services laws and up-to-date mandated reporter training
- Required State and Federal clearances
- Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment
- Competency with internet-based data management software, and Google Workspace, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations
- Desire to be part of building the larger school culture and community, particularly with regard to student well-being as it relates to equity, inclusion, and belonging
Preferred Qualifications
- PA School Nurse Certification
- Background/experience as a school nurse, or in a related nursing field
- Act 48 continuing education for Nursing license and Education Specialist II Certificate
Physical Requirements
- Standing for extended periods of time

- Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, grasping
- Light lifting – up to 25 pounds
- High level of manual dexterity
- Use of hands for fine motor activity
- Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and that may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) objects and materials. May be required to lift or move an injured or sick person.
